Hawke’s Bay has a new art installation. It comprises separate sculptural forms clad in Corten steel and concrete that merge into the land. You’ll find it between a man-made lake and the Tukituki River in the shadow of the Te Mata Hills. The word unique is overused, but in this case it is apt. This masterpiece, which totals 354sqm, is divided into two unique spaces or ‘houses’; their natural tones and organic shapes work to ensure the buildings sit comfortably on the site.

The ‘living house’ in weathered steel is breath-taking with its all-black interior. The designer kitchen has a 7-metre long work bench which cuts through the living area, while slate floor tiles, a spotted-gum ceiling and blackened steel walls add to the moody vibe. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors open up three sides of this space to maximise the incredible views and allow entertaining to spill outside to the fireplace, a towering statement in matching steel. The ‘sleeping house’ is 20m away and comprises two bedrooms, each with ensuite and kitchenette. Wow-factor curved in-situ concrete snuggles into the landscape. Inside, slate tiles are repeated on the floors, but this time with oak ceilings and walls, while sliders open to sunrises over the Tukituki. Sustainability measures include storing ground water off Te Mata Peak for irrigation and the garden, and an environmentally friendly septic system.
