This year we are celebrating 30 Years of House of the Year! Over the next few months we are going to be shining a light on some of the people who have played a massive part in the competition. Keep an eye out on our channels as our members share some of their best memories as a builder.
“The onsite environment is one of the most enjoyable aspects of our industry. The banter between sub-contractors and workers onsite means there is never a dull moment.
I was site manager working in London and we had reached a milestone on one of the projects. It was a Friday afternoon in Wimbledon and there was about 20 or so workers onsite, all different nationalities. The owner of the company instigated a bike race between the two current projects that were currently underway, and we were going to finish with a few beers and a BBQ. Half a dozen of the staff entered the race, the rest were at the finish line to cheer them on.
Well the bike race was just the beginning of the competition. As the afternoon wore on, the Worksite Olympics were under way. There were individual and team events and I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard. Out of all the different nationalities: Australian, Polish, English, Irish, Albanian, Brazilian, South African, Jamaican – the Kiwis came out on top.
I’ve been building for 27 years now and Percival Construction is in its 10th year of business. We never intended to start our own company, it just happened. Despite starting during the Global Financial Crisis, we have been consistently busy over the years. The highlight for our company would be winning the House of the Year National Craftmanship Award in 2018. We have been entering since 2013 and it has given us great exposure over the years.” – Damian Percival, Percival Construction
