Restoration of this magnificent Category 2 homestead in North Canterbury, following the Kaikoura earthquakes, took 18 months. No detail was too small in preservation of the original features, including the six chimneys and 10 open fireplaces.
Careful dismantling of the ornate timber and plaster features was required before the lath and plaster from the walls and ceilings could be worked on to put the house back together.
The owners used the opportunity to create an open-plan kitchen/living/dining space and remodel the four bathrooms of their sprawling five-plus bedroom 855sqm home.
Now the kitchen is light-filled with a large central island, contrasting cabinetry and marble splashback. And the main bedroom’s ensuite is a wonderful meld of the old and new with the original sash windows co-existing with the tiled shower and marble flooring.
But it’s the square turret and restored wraparound veranda, enhancing and connecting the living spaces to the beautiful grounds, that will leave guests in wonder.
