An Ashburton home and a Merivale renovation have won this year’s Supreme Awards in the Canterbury and Mid & South Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2018 House of the Year competition.
Lone Pine Building Limited won three regional awards at the competition. They were awarded the Canterbury and Mid & South Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2018 Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the CARTERS New Home $1 million - $2 million for their Ashburton home. They were also awarded the Craftmanship Award.
Takahe Construction Limited was awarded the Canterbury and Mid & South Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2018 Supreme Renovation of the Year, along with a Gold Award and Category win for the Renovation over $1 million Award. They were also awarded the Interior Design Award and the Outdoor Living Award.
Judges said the winning House of the Year is a timeless, well-crafted home that will serve the owners of the land for generations.
“The combination of an architect and a builder at the top of their games has taken the terminology "attention to detail" to another level.
“The house is divided into three wings. The main living wing is anchored to the site with beautifully crafted artisan schist walls leading into the heart of the home, then extending to the outdoor entertaining area. Views across farm land to the mighty Southern Alps are framed by steel posts with cedar infill.”
Judges said the winning Renovation of the Year maintained the character and quality of the original build, with the builder expertly enhancing each aspect of the home.
“This expansive home suffered extensive damage from the Christchurch earthquake. With a great deal of difficulty, the home was mechanically relevelled and then stripped back. This enabled further structural additions, as well as extensive alterations and renovations.
“The addition of a major outdoor living space, with automated louver roof system and retracting doors, allows the perfect indoor-outdoor flow and its clean sharp lines present a minimalist yet striking addition to the home. It is a beautifully crafted response to the needs of the client, and something the builders can be proud of for many years to come. An absolute pleasure to judge.”
The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on 27 July at Wigram Airbase in Christchurch. The winning builds were celebrated by Canterbury and Mid & South Canterbury Registered Master Builders Association members and colleagues from the local construction industry.
There were 63 Gold Award winners from the Canterbury and Mid & South Canterbury region which will now be judged against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists.
National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on 24 November at the Cordis Hotel in Auckland.
The Awards are made possible through the support of PlaceMakers, Master Build 10-year Guarantee, GIB, Nulook, CARTERS, Plumbing World, Resene and Bunnings Trade.
