Canterbury Region’s top builds announced
A Mount Pleasant home and a Fendalton renovation have taken out this year’s Supreme Awards in the Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2017 House of the Year competition.
John Creighton Builder Limited won seven regional awards for two homes at the competition. They were awarded the Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2017 Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award and Category Win for the New Home over $2 million award for their Mount Pleasant home. They also won the Craftmanship Award, the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award and the Heart of the Home Kitchen Award for the same home. They were also awarded a Silver Award in the Renovation over $1 million category for a Taylors Mistake home.
John Hamilton Construction was awarded the Registered Master Builders 2017 Supreme Renovation of the Year, a Gold Award and Category Win for the Renovation over $1 million award.
Judges said the winning House of the Year was a wonderfully constructed home which demonstrates an incredibly high level of accuracy throughout.
“This is a family home with substance, making the most of the site and views across the city and the sea,” they said.
“Architecturally very innovative, this was a challenging project which has been executed to the highest standard.
“A designer kitchen incorporates a large wine cellar with a seamless flow to the outdoor living area. The home successfully incorporates a mixture of concrete and aluminium Arteco panels, oak flooring, together with the black and white theme.
“This home meets the needs of the owners perfectly and has been created by an exceptional builder.”
Judges said the winning renovation was a historic and much admired Fendalton home that has been virtually re-built from the inside.
“The skill of the builder is very clear as the house has been strengthened, repaired, modernized, extended, and remodelled to ensure it lasts another 100 years,” they said.
“Solar heating and many other sustainable features have also been added.
“Details have been reproduced perfectly and the décor, although contemporary, completes the project to produce a very comfortable family home for modern living.”
The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on 28 July at the Wigram Airforce Museum. The winning builds were celebrated by Canterbury Registered Master Builders Association members and colleagues from the local construction industry.
There were 51 Gold Award winners from Canterbury, which will now be judged against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists.
National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on 25 November at SKYCITY in Auckland.
The Awards are made possible through the support of PlaceMakers, Master Build Services, GIB, Nulook, CARTERS, Plumbing World, Resene and Bunnings Trade.

About the Registered Master Builders 2017 House of the Year
The competition is divided into two parts – the first is at a regional level, the second at a national level. Gold, Silver and Bronze Award winners are determined using a points-based system. These award-winners are announced at 10 regional events held throughout New Zealand during July and August.
The top local Gold Award winners become Gold Reserve National Finalists. The national finalists are then re-judged by a panel of judges who determine the overall national winners, which are announced at the National event in Auckland on 25 November.
