East Coast, Manawatu & Whanganui region’s top home builds announced 15 July 2017

A Mahia home and a Havelock North renovation have taken out this year’s Supreme Awards in the East Coast, Manawatu & Whanganui Registered Master Builders 2017 House of the Year competition.

Bain Construction Limited won six regional awards for three homes at the competition. They were awarded the East Coast, Manawatu & Whanganui Registered Master Builders 2017 Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the New Home $550,000 - $700,000 award for their Mahia home. They also won a Gold Award and the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award for a renovation in Gisborne in the Bunnings Renovation $500,000 - $1 million category. They were also awarded a Silver Award in the PlaceMakers Volume/Group Housing $450,000 - $700,000 category for another home in Gisborne.

Redmond Builders and Construction Limited was awarded the East Coast, Manawatu & Whanganui Registered Master Builders 2017 Supreme Renovation of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for Bunnings Renovation $500,000 - $1 million Award. They were also awarded the Heart of the Home Kitchen Award and the Outdoor Living Award.

Judges said the winning House of the Year was constructed on an extremely exposed site overlooking Mahia, which meant the builder had many challenges to face.

“This understated, clever design incorporated many features which capture the uninterrupted surrounding views,” they said.

“Surrounded in floating timber decks and clad in vertical cedar, this beach house shows many areas of detailing and workmanship.

“The builder has constructed a wonderful beach house and completed the owners dream.”

Judges said the winning renovation was a very unassuming 1950s house, which was extensively modernized with a seamless result.

“Additions and exterior detailing were carefully reproduced to match the existing home,” they said.

“Outdoor areas have been created at different ends of the house with a superb pool area, pool house, and an additional dining area and guest accommodation.

“The use of existing timber floors and modern décor has made this a true modern family home.”

The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on 15 July at the Napier Conference Centre. The winning builds were celebrated by East Coast, Manawatu & Whanganui Registered Master Builders Association members and colleagues from the local construction industry.

There were 11 Gold Award winners from the East Coast, Manawatu & Whanganui which will now be judged against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists.

National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on 25 November at SKYCITY in Auckland.
T
he Awards are made possible through the support of PlaceMakers, Master Build Services, GIB, Nulook, CARTERS, Plumbing World, Resene and Bunnings Trade.

About the Registered Master Builders 2017 House of the Year

The competition is divided into two parts – the first is at a regional level, the second at a national level. Gold, Silver and Bronze Award winners are determined using a points-based system. These award-winners are announced at 10 regional events held throughout New Zealand during July and August.

The top local Gold Award winners become Gold Reserve National Finalists. The national finalists are then re-judged by a panel of judges who determine the overall national winners, which are announced at the National event in Auckland on 25 November.
