Saturday 21 July 2018 - East Coast region’s top home builds announced

A Wairoa home and a Gisborne renovation have taken out this year’s Supreme Awards in the East Coast Registered Master Builders 2018 House of the Year competition. 

ABC Design Limited won three regional awards at the competition. They were awarded the East Coast Registered Master Builders 2018 Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the New Home $550,000 - $700,000 award for their Wairoa home. 

Bain Construction Limited was awarded the East Coast Registered Master Builders 2018 Supreme Renovation of the Year, along with a Gold Award and Category win for the Master Build 10-Year Guarantee Renovation up to $500,000 award. They were also awarded the Craftmanship Award and the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award.

Judges said the winning House of the Year was built with passion and care.

“Large timber columns and beams support the large verandah roof, which provides weather protection and maximises the sun and harbour views.”

“Solar gain, shading and ventilation, together with functionality, have been cleverly incorporated into the design to make this a comfortable and easy house to live in.

“The carpentry and other trades work has been accurately constructed, and this is evident in the high-quality finish. This is a worthy Supreme winner.”

Judges said the winning Renovation of the Year is a farm house with both character and history. 

“This large farm and farm house has been in the same family for generations and was originally built by the present owners’ grandfather in 1934, but the question was raised, “do we knock it down or work with what we’ve got?”

“The correct decision was made as the house had good bones. The builder has done an impressive renovation, stripping back most areas, remodelling and modifying.”

The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on 21 July at the Emerald Hotel in Gisborne. The winning builds were celebrated by East Coast Registered Master Builders Association members and colleagues from the local construction industry.  

There were seven Gold Award winners from the East Coast region which will now be judged against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists.

National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on 24 November at the Cordis Hotel in Auckland.
