JOHN S MACDONALD BUILDERS - 2016

“At school I sat in the back of class and didn’t pay much attention. I was far more of a hands-on learner. I guess that’s why I like building so much. Each day we can take a step back and see what we’ve achieved. It’s also immensely rewarding to have customers tell us what a great job we’ve done.

A lot of our work is building fairly high-end homes. The great thing about working in this space is we get to really show off our craftsmanship and produce something that blows people away.

One of my favourite projects was building a family home for my now business partner. It’s true what they say: collaboration is key. Everyone involved in the project worked so well together to build something outstanding. He said to me “I’m coming out of this place in a box. I’m never leaving”. That was a great feeling, knowing we were able to build them their dream home, that worked for their family and was something they could live in for years to come.

I think people sometimes underestimate the value House of the Year can bring to your business. If you’re just starting out in the area and don’t really know anyone it’s a great way to get recognition. Word of mouth is the best way to find your builder in New Zealand, but going on to the House of the Year website and looking at the winning projects can be the next best thing.” – John McDonald, John S MacDonald Builders
