Mid and South Canterbury Region’s top builds announced

An Oamaru home and a Timaru renovation have been announced as this year’s finest Mid and South Canterbury homes, winning Supreme Awards in the Mid and South Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2016 House of the Year competition.

High Country Carpentry Limited won five regional awards with the Oamaru home, including the Mid and South Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2016 Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the Carters New Home $1 million - $2 million Award. The company also won the Craftsmanship Award, and the Sustainable Home Award for the same property.

Wilson Building Timaru Limited was awarded the Mid and South Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2016 Supreme Renovation of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the Renovation Award over $500,000.

Judges called the Oamaru new build a complex project that required a challenging construction method using unconventional building materials.

“This home was built as a traditional log cabin using locally sourced logs, which made it particularly unique. As logs shrink over time, the builders had the challenge of calculating shrinkage for each one in order to determine the finished height of the home after four years. This also required careful consideration around window placement, to avoid shattered windows as pressure increases.

“The design of this home allowed for great solar gain, with the logs making both the structure and cladding very sustainable. It is completely off the grid with large PV panels on the garage roof. Should the PV Panels not provide enough energy, there are also diesel boiler and gas back up facilities available. The wall R rating is the highest that we’ve seen, and the window joinery was thermally broken with Argon filled Low E Glass.

“Given the nature of this type of construction, the builder’s craft was amazing in every respect and a worthy winner of this category.”

Judges said Timaru renovation displayed a high-level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.

“A major overhaul of this property has been undertaken to take full advantage of the north facing views over the adjacent golf course and the sea views to the east.

“The architect and builder have worked well together to produce a magnificent home with a seamless transition from old to new.”

The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on 15 July at the Ashburton Hotel. The winning builds were celebrated by members of the Mid and South Canterbury Registered Master Builders Association and members of the local construction industry.

There were 10 Gold Award winners from Mid and South Canterbury which will now be judged against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists.

National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for the 2016 House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on 26 November at The Langham in Auckland.

The Awards are made possible through the support of PlaceMakers, Master Build Services, GIB, Nulook, Future-Proof Building, Carters, Plumbing World, Resene and Bunnings Trade.
