A Nelson home and a Kaiteriteri renovation have won this year’s Supreme Awards in the Nelson, Marlborough & West Coast Registered Master Builders 2018 House of the Year competition. 

Scott Construction Limited won four regional awards at the competition. They were awarded the Nelson, Marlborough & West Coast Registered Master Builders 2018 Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the CARTERS New Home $1 million - $2 million award for their Nelson home. They were also awarded the Craftmanship Award.

Dan Anderson Building was awarded the Nelson Marlborough & West Coast Supreme Renovation of the Year along with a Gold Award and Category win for the Renovation over $1 million award for their Kaiteriteri renovation. 

Judges said the winning House of the Year delivered the owner’s vision.  Using concrete and glass, they have been able to capitalise on the spectacular views on top of Nelson’s Port Hills. 

“This was an extremely difficult undertaking to create a home from materials which you would expect to find in a high-end commercial development.

“Precast panels have been carefully placed to provide robust support for the building. They also provide a contrasting backdrop to the elegant timber stairs serving three levels.

“Beautifully crafted joinery adorns the living areas, with the owner lending his hand to the feature wave-pattern acoustic ceiling panels and kitchen. Congratulations to the team at Scott Construction for this outstanding achievement.”

Judges said the winning renovation of the year transformed a simple bach into a beautifully crafted holiday home. 

“This extensive three-level holiday home has been completely renovated and extended. The double garage was relocated under the existing living space. This required extensive excavations while being propped up. 

“Large steel beams and posts were installed over the garage to carry the new large kitchen, dining and living rooms above. They also provided cantilevered support to the new large decking areas which now allow good indoor-outdoor flow.

“This is an outstanding renovation that took place on a difficult site. The builder needs to be congratulated on a job well done.”

The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on 13 July at Annesbrook in Stoke. The winning builds were celebrated by Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast Registered Master Builders Association members and colleagues from the local construction industry.  

There were 10 Gold Award winners from the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast region which will now be judged against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists.

National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on 24 November at the Cordis Hotel in Auckland.
