Q & A with Nelson interior designer Char Jack 2019

Char Jack worked in London and Hong Kong as a creative director in the fashion industry before moving to the south of France, where she and husband Paul lived for 11 years. They renovated and developed properties, from 250-year-old barns to centuries-old chateaux. When they returned to New Zealand and settled in Nelson, the couple established their furniture and design business EDITO. Char travels to Europe twice a year to source vintage pieces for their gallery.

How do you describe your style?

European vintage/contemporary, which forms the perfect mix of old and new. I love clean simple lines and detail. It’s all about the combination of elements – carefully thought-out placement and a considered approach that appears effortless.

What inspires you about living in your region?

The pure, clear light and incredible views, which are ever-changing and breathtaking. From the sunrise over the hills to the magical sunsets reflected across the water, the energy and sense of wellbeing is such a privilege in our busy world.

What’s the last thing you bought for your home?

The stunning Miller coffee table from the ‘Verdon for EDITO’ collection. It’s organic and natural with a 1950s influence, yet very contemporary. The table is a real talking point in our home.

What’s your favourite room in the house?

Our upper-level living room. I love sitting in my corner spot on our linen Avalon sofa soaking in the views. The double-height vertical windows frame the hillside farm and sea-to-mountain landscape.

What trend do you wish would make a comeback?

I don’t particularly follow trends but I like to be aware of them and you would find it hard to keep me away from the International Design Fairs in Milan and Paris. I’m an avid researcher and have a great sense of what’s next. I like timeless, well-considered design and source and curate the key pieces that I know will bring our clients something exclusive and new, yet maintain a sense of timeless style.

If money were no object, what would you buy for your home?

A 100-year-old thread rack with nine wooden spindles and vibrant silk thread colours. It’s an amazing French industrial object that I’ve been coveting for years. I may just have to take a trip back to France to make the purchase.

Where would you spend the bulk of your renovation budget?

A French-style concrete basin in the garden to really complete the Mediterranean look and to take advantage of the incredible Nelson summers. Or, a small studio office with French doors opening out to my little olive grove – a personal space for calm and reflection or creative thinking.

What would you go budget on?

Little ceramic decor objects. Farmers has a stunning stoneware range that has a beautiful hand-crafted feel – great to use as serving dishes for an aperitif with a glass of bubbles.
