The Kitchen Report 2018

Minimalist Fantasy

This Poliform Varenna kitchen from Studio Italia is an ode to the beauty of clean lines, in which there’s a place for everything and everything is in its place. The trick here is to have enough storage, so nothing needs to be on the benchtop.

Full transparency

It's very much a case of what you see is what you drink with these glass teapots and cups. Clear glass vessels are a happening trend, appearing in kitchens all over the country right now.

Cup from IVV two-piece espresso set, $55, from Smith & Caughey's; glass teapot, $125, from Paper Plane.

White now

Trends come and go but the enduring power of white is steadfast when it comes to serveware and dinnerware.

This milk maiden jug will add a touch of purity and old-school charm to your dinner table, even if you have a pitcher of margaritas inside. $69 from Father Rabbit.

Open-plan cooktop

With open-plan living pretty much the norm these days, Miele's latest TwoInOne cooktop, $6299, combines advanced induction technology with an integrated downdraught extractor to deal with any steam and odours as they happen  – while keeping your interior lines clean. Atfer all, it's not ideal to have dinner's smell linger as you relax in minimalist splendour watching telly.

Grey matter

Imperfect is the new perfect.

Try serving dinner on this pleasingly irregular plate, $12.95,  from Freedom Furniture.

Dark Sink

The black kitchen sink definitely ups the ante in any kitchen design. Oliveri granite sink by Telma, $399, from PlaceMakers.
