Encased in metal sheeting, and macrocarpa milled off the owners’ farm, this modern Taupiri treasure rests happily in rural surrounds. While stunning in its simplicity, the design is far from straightforward.
The roof is all but hidden thanks to internal gutter slopes and discreet downpipe placement. External walls do not run parallel with the roof-line and few walls – internal or external – meet at 90-degree angles.
Passageway walls are lined in vertical macrocarpa, while the three bedrooms, office and utility rooms are simply clad in gib. An absence of architraves, skirtings and scotias support the stripped-back feel, leaving no room for less-than-perfect craftsmanship.
The open-plan living area with fireplace, daybed and polished concrete floors is a dream. Glass doors open off the kitchen to the loggia, which features a fully plumbed outdoor kitchen. A second lounge, complete with projector cradle and black-out curtains, caters to cinephiles. The master ensuite features a designer freestanding tub and views from floor-to-ceiling glass.
