The architect’s ingenious take on beach living is relaxed yet refined. The first point of difference: the absence of a front door, reinforces the informal feel. Instead, access is via two sets of sweeping steps. Defined as three overlapping volumes, the layout creates a central courtyard for outdoor living. This helps to diminish the overall scale of the dwelling. The house has a strong connection with the ground, but it is elevated for a visual connection with the dunes. The bedroom wing and first floor suite are accessed from a covered outdoor pathway in tune with beach life. The overall layout allows for casual movement through the house. The interior material and colour palettes exude warmth and sophistication. Materials were chosen to complement the beach environment and have a relaxing effect. Timber cladding is stained grey in anticipation of the natural fade that will happen in the salt air. Block and gabions work harmoniously with the driftwood colour of the timber while adding an appealing textural quality to the exterior. Textures add great interplay inside also.
