This photogenic holiday home in Hurunui knows how to work its angles. Designed by and built for an architect, this striking build with tilting walls and raking ceilings presents a collection of uniquely shaped volumes clad in dark-stained random width vertical cedar.

The separate outdoor bunkroom sets itself apart in a lighter shade of timber. A smart external staircase provides direct access to the top bunks. Surprising splashes of sunny yellow deliver a contemporary kick.

A living pod and sleeping pod make up the main building with two bedrooms and two living spaces.

Inside the open-plan area, walls lined with golden timber and matching floors create a cosy cocoon-like feel. Pine clears have been used to construct the inviting daybed, a pull-down bed and a wine case. Cast in situ, the sculptural concrete fire hearth is in tune with the whole. Its wood burner warms the home.

Open-plan living flows out to a well-designed covered alfresco area and sun-soaked dining space with concrete dining set-up. There’s also an outdoor bath for ultimate open-air relaxation.
