Rebuilt to be a contemporary house, this 1920s Wellington bungalow retains the perfect balance between old and new. Selective demolition has allowed for construction of the new aluminium-panelled rear wing, its rooftop rising as if about to take flight. This form echoes the striking steel structured carport with cedar slats which has replaced the backyard garage. The split-level rear extension contains the spacious master bedroom which opens to a private terrace. This outdoor living space is also easily accessible from the superb new kitchen. The three-bedroom house was completely gutted, re-wired, re-plumbed and fully insulated. Existing windows were replaced with double-glazed timber and aluminium joinery. The decorative plaster scotia has been reinstated over the dining area. Original matai floors have been lovingly restored by skilled carpenters. New kitchen joinery, complete with a large island, and a sleek ensuite continue the theme of a modern renovation under the guide of a traditional bungalow.
