Space for grandchildren, family and friends to stay and play was foremost in mind for the design of this elegantly understated Christchurch replacement for a much-loved family home.
The street frontage features a high-pitched, gabled roof and an abundance of cedar – satisfying the owner’s brief for a single-storey home, utilising natural products that sat well on its expansive flat section.
Outdoor living is maximised with decks on either side, framing the well-established garden that builders were careful to protect during construction. The house’s foundations were set slightly higher than normal to give the appearance of the home floating above the ground.
Inside, four bedrooms, two bathrooms and separate living spaces ensure there is ample space for this busy household. A guest wing can be closed off cosily.
High pitched ceilings atop timber floors in the living area and heaps of glazing throughout enhance the links to nature. The master bedroom consists of two vast walls of glass allowing the owner to enjoy her garden. Other indulgences are a small library and separate media room.
