Brimming with warmth and character, this Kaipaki escape achieves a cosy cabin feel without the tiny footprint. The sweeping 188sqm layout opens to natural surroundings, framing views from almost every room.

The brief from the client was to create a simple building reminiscent of a DOC hut that had little impact on the existing ecological environment. This was masterfully achieved and the judges bestowed the Special Award onto the house for exactly this reason, as well as picking up the National Category Award.

An expansive deck runs along the face of the property, creating incredible flow to the outdoors from the three bedrooms and open-living living space. The river and native bird life create an idyllic outlook and serene soundtrack to daily life.

Golden timber creates a warming embrace inside, enhanced by the feature fireplace. Sleek concrete is a grounding force that also acts as a passive heat source. Thermally modified timber cladding sourced from the Kaingaroa Forest is another sustainable feature.

Bespoke minimalism prevails in the contemporary kitchen with its rich wood-veneer cabinetry and hot-rolled industrial splashback. The bathrooms exude moody opulence with elements of bronze and copper.

Timber-lined skylights enhance illumination and contribute to the secluded lodge-like feel of this sensational home.
