Has a ‘simple timber box’ ever looked so good? The concept was the starting point for this sublime 435sqm home with intricately detailed exterior screens. Downstairs, the living areas are elevated on a concrete platform so the owners can see the beach across the road. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors connect to the outdoors and the back of the house opens to a walled garden containing a pool and orchard. The cedar- and concrete-clad home sits on precast concrete and steel posts, which help define the living and service spaces on the ground floor. Take the stairs or lift upstairs and you’ll find five bedrooms, three with ensuites, and a family bathroom. There’s also a second living room along with recessed balconies that take in those sea views and provide cover. Cedar, aged bronze and travertine tiling give the interior its organic ambience, while the facade, crafted from iroko timber by the carpenters, gives the property its distinctive appearance. The resulting timber screen and glazing filter the light and visual connection between the private areas of the house and its public face.
