It’s called ‘Fab One’, and for very good reasons. This home was prefabricated in two 45sqm sections at DStevens’ workshop, then transported and craned into place on a site that has fabulous views over Tairāwhiti Gisborne and Tūranganui-a-Kiwa Poverty Bay. Once in place, the builders went to work crafting the ply-lined interior and cladding the home in sustainably sourced timber. The largest in an architecturally designed series of homes, ‘Fab One’ has a double-height living-dining area and media corner on the ground floor. The kitchen is cleverly tucked beneath and behind the stairs, which lead to two double bedrooms and a bathroom – all with views. This simply sublime dwelling sits easily in its landscape and is built from readily available, low-treated timber framing. A thick external envelope with R4.0 insulation and double-glazed aluminium windows and doors keep things warm. Glass louvres provide ventilation. Building on a modest footprint is the most sustainable approach, as this home attests. With a lovely connection to the land, this smart design is absolutely fabulous.
