Now for something completely different. Here’s a holiday cabin that’s also a showcase of Abodo thermally modified timber products – for cladding, structure, linings, flooring, joinery, furnishing and fence posts. It’s clear from the fully exposed timber interior that precision craftsmanship is on show here too. Using heat rather than chemicals, Abodo converts rapidly renewable, locally grown radiata pine into high-performance timbers that withstand the harsh local conditions. The trees are New Zealand grown and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) certified. Abodo’s Vulcan Cladding is the first verified carbon-negative feature timber. The 112sqm cabin, a simple shape inspired by the Central Otago stone shed, has a high-performance thermal envelope and, had a rangehood been installed, it would have garnered a Homestar 7 rating. Step through the steel archway framing the entrance and you’ll see an open space with a bathroom and an office or bunk room. A bedroom loft above the laundry is accessed by a ladder stair. Exposed studs and rafters are positioned over tongue-and-groove walls and ceilings. Beautiful.
