With the shore of Lake Taupō virtually at its doorstep, this project was all about easing the house into its very special environment. Mission accomplished. The single-level house makes a stylish statement in cedar and plaster, yet never detracts from its remarkable setting. With linked twin pavilions, the design ensures the site’s natural assets are enjoyed throughout the home. From morning coffee on the patio to cocktails on the central sheltered deck, the options to engage in the setting are sublime. The interior has a lot to live up to and doesn’t disappoint. Cedar feature walls in the entrance, living room and kitchen provide continuity with the exterior aesthetic. Raking ceilings in the living area add volume and twin sliders open onto the lake-facing deck, offering spectacular views and letting light flood in. The remainder of the 218sqm home also feels light and spacious. Two bathrooms feature tiles that echo the natural tones used elsewhere, and the main bedroom, which has a walk-in robe and ensuite, has raking ceilings. Twin ducted heat pumps and a gas fire make the four-bedroom residence a delight to inhabit, even during those crisp winter Taupō evenings.
