The beauty of minimalism is celebrated in this home that subtly demonstrates the art of living simply. Built on the shores of Lake Tarawera and looking out towards Mount Tarawera, the four-bedroom beauty places views centre stage, while crisp, clean lines allow life to flow. However, the pared-back appearance takes care and attention to achieve behind the scenes. For example, the 3m cantilever that extends from the second storey required two major footings to brace the building. This also allowed two 6m stacker doors to open up an entire corner of the living area to the sublime surrounds, as well as provide shelter for the vast wraparound decking. The 261sqm home, which has been built for a Japanese family, is all subdued hues and warm timber tones. Downstairs, the living zone is simply furnished with high-end pieces. The design of the entrance was very important to the clients. As a result, they have a 2.3m x 2m sliding front door made of reclaimed swamp timber. It marries perfectly with vertical Abodo cladding and dark metal trims. Timber balusters extend from the staircase to the ceiling, leading to bedrooms, a guest/office and second living room that also enjoy outstanding views.
