Add two cultures to two sets of life experiences and the sum is a home full of personality. The owners have Dutch and American backgrounds and their distinctive three-storey Timaru home reflects the breadth and wealth of their collective history. Every detail contains a story. Steel-plate steps reference the Dutch owner’s youth spent aboard defence-force ships. Quaint picture windows were chosen instead of expanses of glass to suit the character of the house and provide wall space for an extensive art collection. These windows still manage to frame the rural outlook and add to the visual treats here. The interior, in warm earthy tones, has a number of stars, including the charming timber staircase. In fact, character and features abound, from the Shaker-style kitchen detailing to the schist fireplace. From the outside, the house makes a striking statement in a combination of plaster and bevelled weatherboard offset with schist. Soaring gables give the three-storey, three-bedroom, three-bathroom house a sense of drama and history – fitting for a property designed to combine and reflect the full lives of its owners.
