On the semi-rural fringes of Timaru, you’ll find this striking, architect-designed 339sqm house. Its two distinct gabled forms are connected by a flat link with membrane roof. It’s both eye-catching and beautiful in dark metal and brick veneer, and trimmed with shiplap cedar. You’ll also see glass wherever you look: in wide sliders, clerestory windows and even in the double-garage doors. Belying the strong, simple lines and materials of the exterior are details that required craftsmanship – hidden gutters and custom-made downpipes, for instance. Connecting the sharp exterior with the four-bedroom, two-bathroom interior are lovely outdoor entertaining and relaxing zones, including one with a louvre roof and a gas outdoor fire. This and the brick fireplace inside have custom-made chimneys. Flooring consists of polished concrete, herringbone timber and tiles which are warmed by a heat pump-fed underfloor heating system.
With all the glass, the house is naturally illuminated during daylight hours which casts interior features such as the slick black kitchen and raked ceiling in a beautiful light. The four bedrooms include a main suite that has a walk-in dressing room and ensuite with custom vanities, a double shower and standalone bath by a vast window. All the bathrooms are fully tiled. Landscaping incorporates fencing that encloses spaces, making them extremely private.
