The simple barn form never looked so good. This Patterson Associates Architects-designed holiday home speaks the Central Otago language of stone and timber. The vernacular of The Gatehouse is expressed in two barn-like structures, one clad in local schist, the other in timber – wholly appropriate for a property on a former sheep station. The brief was to deliver a flexible home for family and guests, which is not as simple as it sounds. Sometimes it has to accommodate lots of people in various stages of their lives; at others, it has to be comfortable for just two. Flexibility was key to the configuration. Still, there was plenty of room to work with – 661sqm, in fact. The timber, slightly smaller of the two pavillions sits on the street side of the site and has bedrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, living spaces and a garage. Across the courtyard and linked by a gallery is the stone pavillion, with bedrooms, a large open-plan kitchen, dining and living area.

A key feature of the five-bedroom, four-bathroom home is a portcullis – an architectural feature enclosing an outdoor room typically found at the entry to castles. This is visually exciting but also brings a sense of protection and privacy. Meticulously crafted details abound, from the two curving timber staircases to floating fireplaces, a loggia with skylights, and internal schist and wood detailing. A tennis court simply adds to the luxury.
