The words “substantial renovation” take on new meaning once you’ve seen this large-scale project. It’s not unusual for builders to be to hired to revamp and enlarge holiday homes for extended families, but this one had to cater to more than 40 people. As a result, this remarkable Lake Rotoiti family treasure now has 10 bedrooms, including two bunkrooms with 24 handmade bunk beds; 10 private bathrooms and 450sqm of decking. The cantilevered round deck is a sight to behold. In the 1184sqm lodge-style luxury bolthole and its environs you’ll find a cinema, wine cellar, barn with climbing walls, garage, playground and tennis court. Louvre-roof alfresco areas ensure that life can be enjoyed outside in any weather – with views of the lake, lawn and bush. The kitchen was also extended, not that you can discern which parts of the lodge are original and which parts are new.

Given the scale, this project was completed in two stages over three years. It’s now a meticulous showcase of natural timber. As well as the bunks, you’ll see columns, beams, features and finishes in rustic macrocarpa and dark oak. Cedar and copper features add warmth and earthiness. Fireplaces provide a different kind of warmth. When you approach the 3.8ha property down its private driveway, you’re struck by it scale, but also by how unpretentious it is and how well the lakeside haven fits into its stunning landscape.
