No detail has been spared in this home that epitomises easy modern living. It’s perfect for the semi-retired farming couple who lives here, but is equally well set up as a sanctuary for generations to come. Located near Lake Hood, south of Ashburton, the 285sqm, three-bedroom home is an exemplar of quality and detail. Top-grade materials, such as the ceiling lined in cedar tongue-and-groove with exposed steel beams, and walls of in-situ poured concrete, illustrate the point. With materials such as these, impeccable workmanship was called for and Stu Bell Construction delivered. In stark contrast to their farm life, the owners’ aesthetic here is minimalist and modern with clean lines. As a result, the finishes had to be pristine and again, the project team came up trumps. Just look at the polished-concrete floors and wide glazing, including clerestory windows.
Decks on either side of the main communal space – one an outdoor room – allows the owners to enjoy the fresh Canterbury air with a glimpse of the Southern Alps. One hundred year old ironbark was sourced from the old Timaru wharf and milled, cut and used to build a pergola over the deck. In terms of durability and external good looks, nothing was overlooked, either. Vertical cedar, concrete and metal-tray cladding provide contrast, a modern vibe and robustness. The charming minimalist native garden is low care.
