An appreciation for simplicity is beautifully illustrated in this three-bedroom central city home from Petersen and Barnes, although it’s somewhat deceptive given the conceptual thinking behind it. Exquisite attention to detail was paid throughout the home’s design, planning and construction, with quality, comfort and access as its guiding principles. Case in point: the black Yakisugi Japanese cedar cladding from Sugi NZ and the ashin pitched ceiling, both of which create a distinctive aesthetic.
Comfort was achieved by the careful orientation of the floorplan on a north-south axis, and installing above-code insulation, windows and a ducted heat pump system. Accessibility needed to be discreet. A multi-stop lift mitigates the steepness of the central city site, servicing the three split levels. Circulation on each level was addressed with wide doors and hallways, the main entrance serving as an initial focal point from which the key spaces branch off, and the main living space opening up to a louvred courtyard. But it’s the lightness of touch and sun-soaked airiness that set this home apart, the high, angular ceilings striking just the right balance between grand and homely. Bespoke outdoor living spaces and beautifully landscaped gardens enhance the elegance of this innovative home.
