Seldom does a collection of buildings coalesce into something so special. This architect-designed beach home, guest house and shed are a skilful blend of rural charm and the best of contemporary living. The trio is the epitome of coastal cool, but also of cohesion. The 200sqm split-level main house is built in precast concrete. Inspiration was taken from an old woolshed and although raw elements have also been brought inside — a precast concrete fireplace and polished concrete flooring, for instance — the interior is all about laidback luxury.
The ground floor is for relaxing. It has an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space almost surrounded by glazing, some of which opens to patios. A garage and laundry complete downstairs. Upstairs takes luxury to a new level: the entire space is devoted to a sumptuous main-bedroom suite with standalone bath, dressing room and ensuite. The other bedrooms? You’ll find two, plus a bathroom in the adjacent guest quarters, which also settle naturally into the site, thanks to cedar cladding and native-plant landscaping. The third building in weathered steel might look like a country shed, but is way more. The build is lined in recycled timber boards and has polished concrete floors, a kitchenette, bathroom with double bed above, and plenty of storage for beach toys. This trio is a triumph, however you look at it.
