To describe this project as an extension to a family bach doesn’t come close to doing it justice. The timber-clad addition (with monopitch roof and cedar screens) that dovetails effortlessly into the existing house is simply beautiful, inside and out. And you don’t achieve this result without a high degree of skill. The builder, who owns the beach property, wanted it to be big enough to accommodate friends and grown-up family, and planned a new open-plan communal space, bedroom suite, laundry and powder room on the ground floor, plus a mezzanine with a lounge and another bedroom with ensuite.

The project, depicted as a modern take on the existing bach and with the subtle use of Kiwiana, again goes beyond these descriptions. It starts with creative design, continues with materials such as timber and stone that reflect the coastal environment and extends into exemplary indoor-outdoor living, some of it covered. It finishes with undoubted craftsmanship. With timber ceilings, screens, cabinetry and feature walls, the quality of finishing is there for all to see. Now the builder and his family have 231sqm of divine beach house with four bedrooms, three tiled bathrooms and two living spaces, one with a fireplace and stone hearth. It’s also a special place to gather, relax and make memories for generations to come.
