When you have views of a stunning seascape, why wouldn’t you build a home to make the most of it? The owners of this architect-designed home did just that, simultaneously adding a striking sculptural form and vivid colour to the local landscape. Vivid yellow — found on the posts and balustrades — never looked so good. The 175sqm three-bedroom, three-bathroom home has been thoughtfully designed to maximise the vistas from multiple vantage points, inside and out. Wraparound decking and a roof terrace are two of the outdoor spots where the owners can take in views of the Pacific and Hen and Chickens islands.
Also eye-catching are the two distinct forms — a main rectangular building linked to a square one. Cladding of vertical corrugate ties them together aesthetically; timber decking and stairs connect them physically. On the lower level, you’ll find two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a living area. Upstairs is a remarkable zone with kitchen, dining and living spaces that stretch out to drink in the views. Wide sliders open to a long balcony. The balcony leads to the main-bedroom suite, a private retreat that takes up the entire first floor of the square building. Downstairs is the laundry, plus a surprise — a sauna. On top, the roof terrace is accessed via an external staircase. This Northland house has wow-factor written all over it — in vivid yellow.
