In this renovation, a 1940s ex state house has been reimagined. Respectfully retaining its heritage character and traditional proportions, the carefully restored weatherboard bungalow still appears modest and familiar from the street. Through the front door, into the original part of the home, the kitchen and living rooms have become four bedrooms, including main with ensuite, and the family bathroom is more grand in both size and provision. A second living room conducts the flow from old to new through a screened outdoor room, which the home is now organised around, and into the open-plan kitchen, dining and living.

Feeling celestial, the extension, which doubles the home’s footprint, opens to a vaulted ceiling with high-level glazing that floods the area with light. Warm timber flooring and custom joinery soften the modern palette, complemented by sleek black accents and refined detailing. Externally, the new addition is defined by clean lines, natural timber detailing and a dramatic pitched form that echoes the original roofline. Vertical screening and exposed structural elements create depth and texture, while expansive glazing opens the home to the covered terrace and brings landscaping in. The alterations and additions have been transformational for the home’s owners. The vision to work with what they had means they can now enjoy contemporary family living, without relocating.
