Working within the constraints of a tightly controlled heritage setting, this 61sqm renovation by Salmond Reed Architects demonstrates just how much skill is required for what appears, at first glance, to be a relatively restrained addition. The project focused on creating a generously proportioned covered verandah for outdoor living, carefully integrated into an existing two-storey colonial villa. While modest in footprint, the renovation demanded a high level of precision and sensitivity. Existing structures were significantly out of level and out of plumb, requiring careful problem-solving throughout the build. Tight clearances around existing timber sash windows and door openings added another layer of complexity, particularly given the need to preserve the character and proportions of the original home.

Traditional detailing and materials sit comfortably alongside the existing structure, with corrugated roofing, timber elements and carefully resolved junctions helping old and new blend seamlessly. Particular attention was paid to the finishing work, from the tight mitred base plinths to the battened ceiling and stone-tile flooring. Those details elevate the project beyond a standard verandah extension, giving the addition a sense of permanence and craftsmanship. The result is an outdoor living space that feels entirely natural to the original home, while adding a new layer of functionality and liveability.
