Extraordinary sites deserve exemplary buildings, and this house demonstrates how it’s done. From its grandstand position, it harnesses sweeping Hauraki Gulf views but never overshadows what nature has served up. The 513sqm house, designed by long-time architectural partners Shanahan Architects, has a seaside flavour to fit its environs. Materials and features are honest and traditional — shingle roofing, painted weatherboards, verandahs and timber detailing around windows. These combine with modern luxuries to deliver a timeless yet modern feel.

Before work could begin, the ground had to be stabilised so the five-bedroom house could make the most of its position atop a slope above the sea. An in-ground palisade wall was constructed to anchor the slope, provide a flat platform and support the building on the north seaward side. On the ground floor, you’ll find communal family living areas that spill onto decking that’s bathed in sun and takes in the vistas. Straddling these are outdoor rooms with louvre roofing. Also on this level: a guest bedroom suite, media room, separate lounge, bathroom, powder room and garage. Up the stairs are another lounge, study, rumpus room, bathroom and four more bedrooms. A bespoke automation system controls everything from roof louvres to motion-driven lights and even closet doors. This home is perfectly tailored for the family who live here, for now and years to come.
