When a home is grand, beloved and rich in period character, any extension must be exceptional. What has been delivered here is exactly that. The existing and new are virtually indistinguishable — the hallmark of a successful addition and builders with extraordinary skill. The 78sqm, two-level project forms the seamless second phase of a carefully considered transformation following a 2023 renovation. Its crowning feature, a glazed ‘lantern’ rising above the roofline, is crafted from cathedral glass and capped with solid aluminium cresting and lathe-spun finials. Made off site across specialist workshops on a purpose-built trailer, it was craned into position in a defining moment for the project. Yet it appears entirely original to the home.

Inside, the addition delivers drama and grandeur. A former bedroom has become a richly detailed library, while a generous sculptural staircase rises through a striking double-height void to the living room above. The lantern washes the interiors with shifting coloured light, while a concealed lift ensures long-term accessibility. Sustainability was important, with salvaged kauri roof framing repurposed into bespoke interior details. A sealed, insulated envelope paired with high-performance heating and cooling systems ensures year-round comfort. The result is a heritage-sensitive, futurefocused extension balancing beauty, longevity, performance and responsible resource use.
