The single-storey house sits lightly within its surroundings, framed by mature bush and the still waters of the lake. The long, low-slung form runs parallel to the shoreline on a challenging triangular section, elevated gently on engineered poles to meet geotechnical requirements. From the front, the home has the sensation of hovering above the water like the deck of a ship; from the rear, it opens into a sheltered outdoor zone centred around a firepit.

Clad in black thermally modified timber that will weather naturally, the exterior is striking and restrained. Expansive sliding glass doors open the home to the lakefront. From the living spaces, views extend through the house, from bush to water, reinforcing a constant connection to the outdoors. Inside, crisp white timber-panelled ceilings and skylights bring softness and natural light into calm, contemporary interiors. In the generous entertaining zone, rimu salvaged from the original bach sits alongside warm brick and black accents, preserving both material history and family memory. A large communal table is designed for shared meals and long evenings, with a bar area and service window linking seamlessly back to the kitchen. A project that honours the spirit of the original bach, while reimagining it for contemporary lakeside living.
