It might be located in the beautiful Manawatū countryside, but this 240sqm home takes its inspiration from another part of the North Island. The clients were influenced by ‘soft country-style’ homes found in Havelock North, but wanted the look reinterpreted for this rural patch — think gables and dark board-andbatten- type cladding with white trim. The build team was part of the project from the get-go. They were involved in discussions about the challenges of both the site and the prevailing weather, all the while concentrating on delivering a house that was both practical and beautiful.
The four-bedroom home is distinguished by thoughtful design and special features. Cast your eye over the raked V-groove ceiling, the use of glass in the bright open-plan communal spaces and the outdoor entertaining zones that flow from them. A built-in window seat is the ideal place to take in the rolling countryside. If a cosier, warmer spot is needed, the owners can hunker down in the media room with its rustic gas fireplace. Adjoining the shared spaces is a sleek white-on-white kitchen with island and scullery. As well as the four bedrooms, one of which has an ensuite, walk-in closet and its own deck, you’ll find a study, family bathroom, separate laundry and double garage. Detailed window trims, skirtings and fittings showcase real craftsmanship, underscoring the care that has gone into every aspect of the build.
