Pekepeke, meaning ‘mountain daisy’ in te reo Māori, lends its name to both the foliage crawling over the high peaks of the nearby mountain range and to the homeowner’s greyhound — so is a deeply personal reference. The cedar cabin rises off the floor next to a forest of large eucalpytus and native trees, which can be witnessed changing across the seasons through the expansive six-metrehigh main windows, which perfectly frame the alpine backdrop. Inside, the carefully crafted wood panelling, stained-glass front door, corner fireplace and floor-to-ceiling library celebrate the cosyness of a cabin in the woods.

All the necessary amenities (plus more) are included: a built-in sofa is a daybed for relaxing in front of the fire or an extra sleeping space at night. Two steps up, the kitchen, dressed in colours of the forest, becomes stage like. The formal entrance is set behind the kitchen and alongside the bathroom, keeping the living area free of doors. On the other side of the kitchen stairs lead up to a mezzanine lined with full-height bookshelves. A fold-down bed and a window seat provide a second sitting zone. Wooden shutters open for views and close for privacy of which there’s a surprising abundance in this compact 72sqm space.
