With a vast, epic landscape such as this, how do you craft something that does it justice? You mirror, frame and become part of it, as this 500sqm home manages to do beautifully, and include those invisible features that guarantee warmth and comfort in this alpine environment. It took a true collaborative approach between the builders, architects Mason & Wales, the owners and others in the project team to get to this luxurious end point, and the results are testament to the approach. Every facet of the home — the schist, concrete, black steel and use of Southland beech in doors, pitched ceilings and interior walls — is evidence of scrupulous attention to detail.

The series of linked pavilions looks right at home in this mountain setting, the layout with expansive, open-plan living and four discrete zones offers places for togetherness and for privacy, skylights filter in natural light and fireplaces indoors and out provide warmth on chilly nights. The designer kitchen with scullery is a masterclass in natural tones and textures. All four bedrooms have ensuites, one of which is above the three-car garage. The remainder of the loft is a versatile space that may end up as a gym or office. Suffice to say, it’s all right here, as part of this great southern wonderland.
