Elevated for sea views, this bach has been comprehensively modernised with a considered and compact layout that remains entirely sympathetic to the original. Without changing the footprint, the beach house now has a kitchen that holds court – flowing to living spaces that open to decks front and back. This is a vast improvement on the old kitchen which was originally closed off on the building’s southern side. With walls of glazing and a horizontal window running along the back bench, light is no longer a problem, and two skylights above the vast kitchen island have a glorious effect.

Two bedrooms share a bathroom down a hallway where the kitchen used to be, with a main suite of grand proportions located discreetly off the living room at the front of the house. Here a window seat gives the occupants a space to sit privately and take in the view. The front deck serves as entry into the home as well as a place for outdoor dining and to curl up on sofas. When it’s time to take in the last of the sun or escape the prevailing wind, the covered back deck with bifolding adjustable louvres becomes the place to be. An outdoor shower and well-equipped laundry room at the end of the deck provide places to wash the beach off, before heading indoors where the new birch-ply cabinetry and battened ceilings retain some of the nostalgia of the old family bach.
