This renovation reimagines an existing Christchurch home into a more generous and layered family residence; the 64sqm extension enhances both spatial flow and everyday living. Designed by Nathaniel Miller Architecture, the project adds three bedrooms and reconfigures the internal layout to improve flexibility. A new main bedroom suite opens via sliding doors to a covered outdoor room lined in warm timber and framed by a cedarbatten soffit. The rest of the home remains a single-storey form with a gently pitched roof, finished in light plastered concrete and punctuated by dark aluminium joinery and extensive glazing. This restrained exterior palette is softened by natural timber used across multiple decks, creating continuity with the extension.

Natural light plays a central role, with motorised skylights and carefully placed box windows bringing daylight into the plan. The material selection is durable and refined, combining plaster, timber, aluminium joinery and fully tiled bathrooms. Inside, the original open-plan kitchen, dining and living area anchors one end of the home. A new second lounge offers a more private retreat, complete with built-in shelving, office nook and the ability to be closed off when needed. A separate laundry and WC round out this renovation that carefully extends the home’s footprint while maintaining restraint and a strong connection to its outdoor spaces.
