If houses could talk, this one would have plenty of stories to tell. The historic mudbrick cottage has evolved over decades, but its latest chapter is one of careful restoration, renewal and readiness for the future. The brief was to create refined contemporary spaces, while honouring the home’s heritage. Earlier additions were removed and replaced with a Corten-clad extension that wraps around the original cottage. Box-like forms at either end create a balanced composition, complementing rather than competing with the historic structure. The original cottage remains front and centre, while the weathered steel references Central Otago’s landscape and history.

Internally, the home has transformed from an inward-looking cottage of small, cellular rooms with thick rammed-earth walls, into a 216sqm light-filled, contemporary retreat that feels open and free flowing, with expansive glazing now capturing views across the Central Otago vineyards, hills and mountains. Hardwood beams trace the footprint of the original cottage, while the carefully preserved coal range and internal rammed-earth walls stand as enduring reminders of its early life. Together, these details honour the home’s layered history, celebrating a narrative of adaptation, resilience and thoughtful renewal. This heritage building demanded close collaboration and on-site solutions. The result is a beautifully resolved home, where history and contemporary comfort exist in harmony.
