Set just below the crest of a hillside, this home commands spectacular views towards The Remarkables, Kingston and Coronet Peak. The farming vernacular is strong in this RTA Studio design, which is arranged in two robust forms, drawing from the region’s traditional sheep sheds in scale, proportion and durability. One shed houses the main living areas, primary bedroom and an outdoor room that is viewed through a glazed wall upon entry. The second contains a living space, family and guest accommodation and garaging. The entry lies between the two sheds.

A stone-clad central fireplace, anchors the living shed structurally and visually, and is a key construction feature, supporting the radiating hardwood timber roof structure and integrating a dual fireplace that serves the interior living space and the outdoor room. A pool and hot tub, accessed from the main living area, outdoor room and family room, complete the design. As with form, materials were selected to reflect the Central Otago rural setting and are suited to the alpine environment: ironbark beams, Abodo timber, purple ash, schist and a pre-weathered galvanized corrugate rainscreen feature. Deliberately modest in appearance, the build demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship, precise detailing and careful coordination, resulting in a sophisticated rural home built to perform and endure.
