Somewhat tired after 100 years of housing Cambridge families, Magnolia Cottage has been completely renovated and given a new lease of life. Solid concrete walls, while making the house sturdy, proved a challenge for the build team whose first stage was the removal of a concrete rooftop watertank to make way for the extension. The removal of internal walls upped the challenge significantly, but has been well worth it when you glide into the open and airy kitchen, living and dining zone that was once a series of small rooms. The space now enjoys all-day sun through new double-glazed timber joinery and opens to a porch (replicating the one at the entry), and an outdoor area with swimming pool.

A formal lounge through glazed Crittall-style doors can be closed off for privacy, and an extension at the eastern end has created space for a bathroom and two new bedrooms, with a third used as an office/music room. Original details maintain the house’s character, such as an ornate ceiling in the former snooker room that has been preserved in what is now a generous main bedroom and ensuite. On the outside, to maintain the building’s heritage, exterior stucco cladding was replicated, along with leadlight windows. Every part has been modernised with new insulation and a fully ducted heating and cooling system, but it’s that charming turn-ofthe- century character that wins you over.
