Wellington & Wairarapa Region’s top builds announced
A Kapiti Coast home and a Mount Victoria renovation have taken out this year’s Supreme Awards in the Wellington Wairarapa Registered Master Builders 2017 House of the Year competition.
S & J Mackay Builders Limited won four awards at the competition. They were awarded the Wellington Wairarapa Registered Master Builders 2017 Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the Nulook New Home $700,000 - $1 million category, along with the Outdoor Living Award for a home in the Kapiti Coast.
Planit Construction was awarded the Wellington Wairarapa Registered Master Builders 2017 Supreme Renovation of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win in the Renovation over $1 million category for a home in Mount Victoria. They were also awarded the Craftmanship Award, the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award and the Heart of the Home Kitchen Award.
They were also awarded a Gold Award and Category win for the Master Build Services Renovation up to $500,000 award for a home in Eastbourne.
Judges said the winning House of the Year was a cleverly designed home with a high level of finish.
“This home was built on a restricted site with the sea and a tranquil lake to the north and beautiful native planting to the south,” they said.
“The connection between indoor and outdoor is well thought out with bunker-like garages, providing privacy between the street and house.
“The home has a high sustainability aspect, with the use of passive heat gain, high insulation levels, durable cladding systems, and the use of grey water for irrigation.
“The extensive use of colour and texture adds to the casual feel of this beautiful home worthy of this award.”
Judges said the winning renovation was simply stunning; a historic house sitting on a steep site on Mount Victoria with superb views over Wellington harbour and beyond.
“Both the interior and exterior of the main house was extensively remodelled, with the design and detailing being matched perfectly with the existing home,” they said.
“A delightful kitchen and living area were added to the rear of the house opening up to a sunny and private outdoor living area.
“The interior layout, quality fixtures and fittings, heating and modern appliances guarantee comfortable contemporary living for generations to come.
“Good old fashioned craftmanship of the builders and joiners was clear to see. An excellent job worthy of this award.”
The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on 11 August at the Carterton Events Centre. The winning builds were celebrated by Wellington Wairarapa Registered Master Builders Association members and colleagues from the local construction industry.
There were eight Gold Award winners from Wellington and Wairarapa, which will now be judged against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists.
Sapphire Awards were awarded to Planit Construction and DR Borman at the event. These are awarded to House of the Year entrants who have achieved 3 regional supreme awards across either renovations or new builds.
National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on 25 November at SKYCITY in Auckland.
The Awards are made possible through the support of PlaceMakers, Master Build Services, GIB, Nulook, CARTERS, Plumbing World, Resene and Bunnings Trade.

About the Registered Master Builders 2017 House of the Year
The competition is divided into two parts – the first is at a regional level, the second at a national level. Gold, Silver and Bronze Award winners are determined using a points-based system. These award-winners are announced at 10 regional events held throughout New Zealand during July and August.
The top local Gold Award winners become Gold Reserve National Finalists. The national finalists are then re-judged by a panel of judges who determine the overall national winners, which are announced at the National event in Auckland on 25 November.
